In Reply To: Most of us, including myself, need a job to survive. However, what really upsets me is the subtle way in which we are told that if you do not meet certain criteria, particularly in terms of education, then you are just a loser, or worse yet, that you don't even exist. I think about all those people earning minimum wage or slightly above that. I still hear the argument that such people have chosen to live that way, and that if only they would work harder they would rise above their status. To this argument, I reply: Bullsh*t. Poor people are not lazy, and considering the costs of education nowadays, especially in the "Land of the Free", your fate very much depends upon your own family background. Poor people are trying to make a living, yet they are not considered worthy of attention on this website. Professionals, as defined according to this website, on the other hand, may not earn much, but unless you are completely unemployed, you will still earn much, much more than any of these people. Complaining about your fate under those circumstances is akin to complaining about the freshness of the caviar. I guess the difference between you and me is to be found by measuring the difference between how low we would get in order to find a job. If you ignore your own principles just to get a job, how much will you continue doing so in order to keep it? If you yield now, your boss will know it, and will ask you to yield even more later on. Is that paying too high a price in the name of an ever more elusive "financial security" ?
Message: The misunderstanding is all yours. Education is free through high school, CUNY has extremely low tuition, and the state universities offer low tuition to in-state residents. And there are lots of scholarships and loans available. If you can't go full-time, go part-time, and stop making excuses for your lack of achievement. Also, anyone, regardless of education or income, can post on these boards. Your whining is even more irritating than that of the stuck-up folks you complain about.
