How does one handle the old over and uderqualified excuses of why after an initial interview there is no further interest? In my case the last three interviews ended in situations where I was liked (and received positive feedback from recruiters but either considered overqualified (which in my book is the lamest excuse possible) or underqualified (which also was bogus given that I have the requisite experience in the field I work in and was applying for a position that required a minimum of ten years experience). How do you handle something like this? I am sick of using recruiters simply because I think that they are not screening me properly for potential positions and are wasting my time in addition to making doubt my abilities. |

The Overqualified is the same as George on Seinfeld who would break up with a girl with the line " it is me not you. You are too good for me" The overqualified is saying you want too much money and will not be happy at this lower slary. Your answer is 1. agree " I hear what you are saying; however, I see some places where I can make a real contribution". 2. Set the table " May I ask what makes you feel that way?" ( This is setting the table for the person to change their mind. Feelings are not concrete and will and do change. You will normally get the real reason on their reply such as , " Well we are going to pay in the mid twenties and you apparetnly want something much higher". Your reply " I am looking for something in the mid twenties to mid thirties however, my range includes everthing benefits, time off, bonus, etc. I thing we are very close." Overqualified is the coed word you cost too much and will not be happy here. It is harder to find a position making less than making more. Employers are always willing to bargaintheir suppliers down to get a good deal but when potential employees are willing to bargain down then we become suspect. Good Luck and I hoe this helps because it has worked for many other candidates who are hitting the Overqualified wall.
