In Reply To: This attitude is typical of HR pinheads, who usually lack the knowledge to ascertain whether someone is over or underqualified. If someone with coinsiderable experience demands a six figure salary for a lower level job, that's one thing, but if they're not, they may not necessarily flee for a better paying job so quickly, particularly when such a job may not exist for quite some time. Also the person may have been underpaid and therefore a lower salary than percieved value for the right situation may not be as unttractive. I was underpaid in the last paid position (and I was a vp) I held before I started my own company in 97. The business failed and I'm looking for work. Factoring in being underpaid by my last job five years ago and not paying myself much while operating a business, I'm more than willing to accept a positon a few levels lower than my most recent few and the commensurate salary. And given the job market and the fact that hr pinheads only hire cookie cutter people and don't have a clue how to evaluate an eclectic background since they only know buzzwords and not the true meaning of the words or required skill sets, If I get such a job, I ain't going anywhere. HR pinheads treat anyone who has been out of a work a considerable length of time like a pariah and that makes someone unemployable. Experienced people waiting for suitable nonexistant jobs then become unemployable. Another reason for someone to take a job they are over qualified for.
Message: I completely agree and I am in a similar situation. I have been told that I would always be looking for a new job if I accepted less than six figures, but that's not true at all. For the kind of illogical reasons that have been mentioned, jobs aren't that easy to come by when you pass 40. What do these people think, that a 22 year old is going to stay with that company forever? In my opinion, young people are impatient and much more likely to jump ship if given the opportunity. Besides, I think it's all just a smoke screen to cover up age discrimination.
