Topic Name: What to disclose during the interview
Message Name: Good reason *to* tell

In Reply To: I don't see any harm being upfront with a potential employer about needing time off shortly after being hired. If you are the most qualified person for the job, this disclosure will not discount your candidacy. Beside, if the grant is as prestigious as you say, there is an associated glory for a company to hire someone like you. Good luck!
Message: I have been on the other side of this for a few years now as a recruiter at a major Wall Street firm. Here is my assessment: If you tell them now, then they know what to expect when offering you a job and they know how to plan for your absence. If, on the other hand, you wait until after they make you an offer, there will definitely be questions about your integrity and dependibility down the line. The may even rescind, indicating that they need to fill this position and keep it filled. Another factor is that you can probably improve your standing by mentioning that you have been selected for this prestigious grant. You can underscore the ways in which this experience will help you with this future job, or at the very least let the recruiter see that *other* people view you as an attractive candidate. Best of luck!
