I'm applying for entry-level jobs in advertising at the moment (I'm graduating in May). I was wondering what employers tend to weigh more, resumes or cover letters, or both. Also, I was told to maybe send a "projects page" where I outline my related school/internship projects in more detail. Are there any other ways to get an interview other than just mailing information out and hoping for the best? |

As a recruiter, here's my take:
Your resume and cover letter are both important. Your cover letter shows me that you have the ability to communicate well in writing, and tells me things that don't fit in the resume (details about current circumstances, goals, etc.). Your resume is the place where you tell me your skills and experience. Together, they give me a complete picture of you.
The project list would be a good addition, as it's going to substitute for "real world" experience since you're a new graduate. Make sure the project descriptions are accurate and show what you've learned in the best light so that the information is useful to the recruiter.
As far as other ways to get an interview, there are plenty of information sources on Vault and other boards, as well as books and magazines. Also, use your school's career center for advice and information.
And yes, pookietooth, there are recruiters out there who don't do a good review of the information, no matter how well it's presented. You just have to hope that you're sending to a recruiter who knows what they're doing and who works in a company with a well-run recruiting process.
