In Reply To: I am finishing up my Ba in psychology in about one year but I have a problem. Once I get out and try to find a job in my field I wont have had any experiance. Does anyone know of any volunteer opportunities in Bronx, New York, that would give me some experiance with counseling? While I do work full time now, I know I will gain from some part time volunteer experiance.
Message: Are you interested in crisis counseling? Then try a battered women's shelter, the Red Cross, or a runaway counseling center. Are you interested in career counseling -- ask around about job hunting support organizations. Is there a local United Way? They should be able to hook you up with several non-profits in need of volunteers. You may also look into grief counseling (every hospice has grief counserors, as do many hospitals). If you are a part of an organized religion, you may want to ask your clergy if there is anything they need, such as support groups, etc. The other tactic is to contact counselors in the area and ask them where they volunteered. Are you going for your master's degree? I had thought that you needed a Master's to become a counselor.
