This is a tough job market to graduate in. I experienced the same thing when I graduated in 1990. Luckily, many are predicting that the current market will turn around soon. It took until the mid-90's when I graduated.
This may be disheartening, but keep your chin up. It took me 4 years after graduation to get into the field I went to school for. What eventually helped is that I took a part-time bank teller position to earn money while I looked for full-time work. In 3 months I applied and was selected for a clerk position. Although the position didn't give me much experience for my chosen field (HR), I did get experience in fleet vehicle mgt, office supplies and equipment mgt, negotiating lease agreements (yes, as a clerk), etc. All of these things are often the responsibilities of HR departments. That experience and my education, was enough for an HR department head to give me a chance. I've been grateful to him ever since.
My advice;
- Try to find a position that will help you to develop the skills you need in your chosen field
- Network, Network, Network
- Attend affordable seminars related to your field
- Attend trade shows or other exhibitions in your field
- Join local and national professional organizations in your field
Good luck! |
