About two years ago, my husband got a job in Denver and we (myself and our 2-yr old son) had about four weeks to prepare. In addition, the new employer was a small company that provided minimal relocation assistance.
The two most helpful resources were the Internet and a Denver-based real estate agent and the agent selling our home in Chicago.
We used the Internet to find a furnished apartment (we had no time to find a house), to notify businesses of our address change, and to find childcare for my son. I also found numbers for local utilities so I could contact them and arrange for service.
Our local agent helped us find movers and, of course, represented us to get our house sold.
The Denver agent helped us find the resources need to buy a new hoouse and provided a lot of information on the quality of different neighborhoods.
In terms of family, my parents, not my husband's were the ones who most resisted our move. It helped me to be very certain mentally and emotionally that the move was the right thing for my family. Having made the emotional commitment made it easier to deal with my parent's resistance in an objective way. We also reassured that they were very welcomed to visit us anytime and that we would visit at least once a year.
There's a lot more I could say on this subject. If I haven't answered your questions, feel free to contact me at jlmwriter@hotmail.com.
