In Reply To: Besides wanting to know what you've been doing, recruiters may also be looking to see if you are truly available to take their job and what sort of time frame you might be operating in. While it's true some places only want to hire those who are currently working or who are being pursued by other companies, a recruiter's job is also to make sure you can or would actually take the job they are presenting. If you've been interviewing and are considering other offers, a recruiter will know to move the process along faster if the employer has an interest in you. As recruiters, we've all been burned by a great candidate who already had an offer but was scheduled to meet with your company and didn't want to cancel the appointment. Good luck in your search!
Message: No candidate in his or her right mind would put all of their eggs in one basket and not puruse all available opportunities, any more than most places would only interview one candidate. If you want to know if a candidate is serious, then ask that particular question. For those not working, availability isn't a problem, is it? You are also less likely to get "burned" by a nonworking candidate, who is likely eager to get back in the saddle. You recruiting types should really rethink this whole concept. My qualifications haven't changed one bit because I'm not on somebody's payroll. I'm still educated, experienced, and qualified.
