If they have your salary history, they can get you on the cheap, or not bother to interview you at all if your salary is too high. If all job applicants refused to play by these stupid HR rules, then we would all be better off. Unfortunately, there are those shameless job applicants who will gladly disclose anything and even give up tissue samples and bodily fluids for the opportunity to be a corporate slave.
Message: I had one company tell me they would absolutely not make me an offer unless I disclosed my current salary. I did it because I had already discussed a salary range I was looking for w/ the HR person and she indicated I was 'in the ballpark'. What a surprise when the offer came back 10K lower than what the ballpark was. They totally based their offer on my salary. It was ridiculous when the HR person said my salary history would never influence their offer...
