Reference checking is their business, and there is a specific format that must be followed to elicit the desired response. Just having a friend ask "What do you think about good old Joe" ain't gonna cut it. The official nature of the service may preclude the natural disinclination to speak spcifically about former employees. Try it both ways and see which way generates the best results for you. Just don't sit passively by, because your career is at stake! |

Just because your friend is calling, doesn't mean the s/he can't be professional.
Many of us have at least one friend who is a manager or HR person, etc. This is the friend who can check your reference.
Obviously, your friend wouldn't identify his or herself as a friend.
