Why pay for this? Just ask someone you really trust to call for a reference.
Having anyone call can be risky. If the HR didn't check your references, the the person at work doesn't know that you are looking for another job unless you told him/her.
If this person finds out, will s/he tell other colleagues? Will s/he get tired of the calls? |

Reference checking is their business, and there is a specific format that must be followed to elicit the desired response. Just having a friend ask "What do you think about good old Joe" ain't gonna cut it. The official nature of the service may preclude the natural disinclination to speak spcifically about former employees. Try it both ways and see which way generates the best results for you. Just don't sit passively by, because your career is at stake!
