Okay,here goes-
I am over 30 and still working in what is essentially considered an entry level type of job. People are starting to ask questions - you're over 30, with a college degree? can't you find a better job? aren't you getting tired of that job? don't you want to move up?
Let's face it, it is no longer socially acceptable to be where I'm at, at my age.
I feel that I HAVE paid my dues and put in my time down at the bottom. All my friends have cool jobs working at software companies and biotechs, and what am I doing?
Apparently the company I work for isn't to anxious to move us "lowly peons" up the ladder. I've been looking for a job elsewhere with little luck. This isn't where I'd thought I'd envision myself ten years ago when I graduated from college. True I realize that your career aspirations change in this constantly changing economy, but I thought I'd be a little bit farther along than this.
I think I need some major life changes. Perhaps a buddist monastary in Tibet?
(PS This is just a little venting) |

Join the club bro. Though Im not in what I would call an entry level position now, I am 38 and making a decent buck but I feel I have hit the ceiling at my job and I'm stagnating. I'm on the web daily looking to see what is out there.
Possible reasons why you may not have moved up the ladder despite your hard work and education:
1. you have not pursued working in other positions/ jobs at your company ? Therefore, you have not diversified your skills. Management probably thinks your happy where you are at so they dont bother you.
2. Did you really piss off a coworker or higher level person ? Let's face it, about 80% of corporate america is about backbiting. Somebody could be saying bad things or joking about you to senior management and you dont even know about it, thus, making your chances of promotion practically zero.
3. Do you think you fit in with your company culture ? Do you know how to play the political game at your particular company ? If not, forget about promotion. I've seen people at my job get promoted who are incompetent and have poor interpersonal skills. However, they knew how to BS, who to get rapport with and to brown nose in the organization.
Get out NOW!! I would not advise lying on your resume. When you do find something better outside and your current company gives you a counter offer of more money, screw them. thats just a trick to make you stay and they still will not promote you after that.
I wish you the very best of luck and perserverence in your new job search !!!
