Do not lie on your resume - for once it gets discovered, you'll be screwed, permanently.
Adding a little marketing flair and some careful wordsmithing, however, is another story:) You should still be able to explain everything you put on your resume.
More education in your early or mid 30s is not at all uncommon. Get your company to help you out with tuition - and get an MBA or an advanced degree in your field. You'll be more marketable then, and better equipped to leave your slave-driving workplace.
Consider changing fields, too - you may do better doing something else. Noone said you have to do the same thing all your life.

Who said this guy or gal deserves to be promoted. For all we know shes working in a customer service position and her current job skills and personality don't make the best canidate for promotion. A college degree is common now and not whats needed for promotion. if the person was content to sit in their position for 10 years it tells me alot about this person. Lack of a take charge attitude, and lack of ambition. This person doesn't deserve to be promoted and should just accept his or her position in life.
