Whatever happened to hiring talent? Too often I see potential STARS discarded by HR. Who the hell is an HR administrator to decide that (for example) having 18 months of successful sales experience is totally inadequate for a position that "requires" 2 years? No interview; resume thrown away...I'm sure that the additional 6 months of sales would have separated the wheat from the chafe...right?!
Ten years ago, a lot more often then now, when a GOOD APPLICANT expressed a strong desire to work for a large company, they found a role for him (versus sending a potnetial STAR to the competition). Maybe not always a perfect fit - but talent and motivation is a hell of a lot harder to teach than some skill!

Agreed. The bottom line is that there's a huge difference between a star and a line worker, and a star can do whatever she puts her hand to inside of a few months. Odds are, with her freshness, she'll be better than someone who's been in the industry/function for 15 years.
I wish, for everyone's sake here, that I worked in HR for a gigantic company where I could spend my days getting to understand people's special talents and use them to kill the competition.
Unfortunately, I too, am a seeker.
