In Reply To: Yes, I would agree that you were an exception to the rule in demonstrating the qualities you describe, but a very welcome exception. I wish I had been interviewed (and hired) by someone like you more often. In general, the higher one goes in a firm, the more terminations or 'squeeze-outs' are motivated by subjective factors. The ability to judge 'fit' is thus a critical measure for interviewers, but it is anything but easy. I also concur with your observations on double-standards for sexual harassment cases.
Message: Not only did I do the things that I described, but my employees tended to be very loyal...even after I went to other companies. The only difference between me and most managers today is that I believe that employees are people. I had very simple rules: 1. Get your work done in 40 hours. If it consistently takes much longer, then you are in the wrong job. That means that we need to find one that doesn't feel like work. 2. If we have to work overtime, I will be there working with you. 3. I won't ask anyone to do something that I would not do. 4. The buck stops with me. If we fail, I fail. Our destiny is linked, so if things go bad, I wan't be hanging anyone out to dry. If things fail, it is my fault as I am the leader. 5. Don't lie to me. While I might get hacked off, I won't bail on you. Just don't let me get blindsided because I don't respond well to total embarrassment. 6. Don't bitch about anyone else in the department unless you want to be telling them the same thing IN MY OFFICE with me helping you out. 6. If there is something going on in your life that's affecting your work, tell me. We can work it out. Good people (not employees) are too hard to find to let one get lost. 7. Let's leave everything that we do and everyone that we interact with...better for the experience. Odessa Klar
