You can indicate that in your freshman year you were not sure of which direction to take your academics in and were distracted by exploring other opportunities. Since then you've assessed what it is that you want and have remained focused ever since. Hopefully, your grades have improved otherwise this explanation won't fly. |

I rarely lie, but had to in the case of my interview with an elite firm that doesn't normally recruit out of college. Basically, I gave them a simple excuse that I had become ill during the semester (mono or something else that's long term) and that I should have taken that semester off, but instead toughed it out and got much worse grades than I was obviously capable of. If you decide that it's NECESSARY to lie, then twist this to suit your needs.
