In Reply To: background info: been at this job for 3 years now, first job out of college, kind of. had one job before this after college but was only there for 1 week and hated it cuz it was boring and everyone i worked with was old and boring. quit that job to take this job. i keep telling myself and other people that i need to find a new job.. main reasons being i feel that i'm underpaid, and compared to previous years, i don't feel as appreciated anymore (might be b/c of different managers). the first 2 years, i was one of the top performers at my company, but this past year ive just lost all motivation. part of it is because of the projects i've been on this year - boring, not interesting, not challenging, learning nothing new. just started a new project this past week, and things are somewhat interesting, but it's a good opportunity, lots of visibility and a good lead role. however, the people on this new project aren't as fun as my previous projects. the main reason i'm still with teh company is because of the people (the ones i worked with on previous projects, not the ones on my current project). i work in consulting, so projects and team members change often, so im not always working w/ the same people. but some of the ones ive worked with, ive become really good friends with and hang out outside of work a lot and are really close. i think one of the reasons i havent tried to get a new job is because of these relationships i have w/ these people. one thing really important about a job to me is the people i work with and having FUN at work (even though you're really there to work). on previous projects i used to have a lot of fun with the people i worked with (even though the one before the current project this past year was boring work, the people were fun). i'm just afraid that when i start a new job, the people wont be as cool and it would be really really boring at work and i'd hate going in each day. another thing to note is that, while i dont have fun w/ my new project right now, i felt the same way the first month or so on my previous project this past year but after some time and new people joining the project it was a lot of fun. another reason i'm still with the company is that I think im just really comfortable where i am, the job is easy, the pay is decent (but i feel i deserve much more), and ive just been lazy to find a new job. as far as salary goes, the reason why my salary is less than i deserve this year was because our company didnt do as well last year, so raises weren't as much. but so far this year, we've been doing a lot better so raises should be more. but, since raises were low last year, along with my boring project, i lost motivation and didn't excel as much in my work - thus i might not be one of the top performers anymore, so even though the company did better, i might not get a super high raise (compared to 2 yrs ago when i got really high raises cuz company did good and i was a top performer). so, if i stay til the end of the year and wait til after raises, i might not get THAT high of a raise anyway since i didn't perform as well this year.
Message: pros/cons: reasons ive stayed where i am: - people at work with are really cool and fun to work with (not people on new project though, people from previous projects but same company so still see them a lot) - previous projects were fun, because of the people - developed close relationships with a lot of coworkers and hang out a lot - really easy job for me, no over time, not stressful, 40 hr weeks (for now since new project) - comfortable where i am, gotten used to it reasons i think about leaving: - salary - feel i deserve more - not motivated anymore, don't care about what i do at work - last project (this whole year) was not challenging at all and was really boring - getting too comfortable where i am, not caring, no motivation - people on current project are boring, not fun like previous projects (at least so far, only been here 1 week) sorry for the long post. what are all your thoughts on this? anyone go through a similar situation and experienced this before? thanks
