In Reply To: darterfish, You raise a very good point here. My original reply came from the poster's point of view - and from his perspective, he was a humble petitioner to the B-schools to which he was applying and he just hoped he was good enough to get in to a good program. But your reply shows the situation from the equally important perspective of B-school marketing teams. They see themselves as humble (and sometimes not-so-humble) petitioners of great potential students like the original poster, and each team just hopes great students will think going to the marketing team's B-school - or ANY B-school - is the best choice. However, just because B-school marketing teams want you to believe getting an MBA is a good idea, doesn't mean it's really the right choice for you. In short, you are right, darterfish. Before doing anything else, the original poster needs to decide on some career goals and then create a description of his desired job and projected career path, as he wants them to be 5-10 years from now. Once he's got career goals in place, the orignal poster can research all his career development options and then decide if getting an MBA is really the best first step to take toward achieving his goals. NOTE: I am not a Vault Gold Member, so I cannot see either the original post or my original reply to it because the thread is 18 months old. Therefore, I don't know if the original post contained any hints about what the poster wanted to do with his MBA when he got it - but darterfish, you are definitely right to be asking that question. BTW, can one of the Gold Members please cut, paste, and repost the messages from before 60 days ago, so I can remember exactly what I'm talking about here? Thanks. :) choosebutchoosewisely
Message: Ha ha! Yeah B-school is all about making more money. Where will the alumni go and be able to pay even more money- this time to the endowment and not tuition. My point about MBA schools, feel free to correct me if I am way off base (haven't been there, don't think I want to... but that could change next week!) are threefold, in this order- 1) Top MBA programs attract top candidates who go on to do great things. These are your classmates. So first thing to consider about MBA program, how will this help your network? 2) Top MBA programs attract top recruiters. All the big consulting firms etc... go to Harvard, MIT, Dartmouth etc... to fill their ranks. Fewer of them go off the beaten path and recruit from some the MBA program in XXX (trying to offend anyone, but I hear they have an awesome social program!). 3) The information you get from the program. Like any school, you get out of it what you put into it. You can head to Yale or MIT and refuse to crack a book and just get by. Or you can go to XXX, study your ass off, ask all your questions and ace the program. Who would be the better candidate in the end? I think the original post was what was the min experience required to get into a top tier MBA program. Hey Biophd_to_MBA you still out there and reading? Give us a shout out if you are...and what u doing with yourself now (pdf, mba or elsewhere?) -darterfish
