I'm in a similar position as you; I left a fairly unfulfilling job (in insurance sales/advisory) to get an MBA in Finance and Accounting. I've had dozens of interviews, from Deutsche Bank and Bear Stearns to HSBC and Wal-Mart. I'll get something eventually - but I think most jobs come from contacts and networking. Vault and the Ladders seem a lot more useful than Monster or Career Builder, as far as online job sites go, but most of the successes I've had insofar as getting interviews came from referrals or personal contacts. In the meantime I'm studying for my CFA, studying Var and Risk Management, and being a stay-at-home dad. (Very glad I saved my money for these rainy days!!) Anyway, getting a good job might take a year or so. Getting a crummy job (like cold calling for insurance or personal finance) can take a weel or so. So I'd say, tough it out, don't settle, and use all of your contacts! |

Hello,
I am looking for some information about the insurance industry. Would you please share with me some of your experiences. From your previous post, it sounds like it might be pretty unfullfilling. I am about to start an MBA program in the fall, but I will be able to work at least part time so I am trying to find a job. I was recently told a story about a friend of a friend who worked in insurance for a year and still gets a $1000 check a month from her residuals. Any truth to that?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Zip3
