I'm currently employed but have been through the interview process with another company. They have now asked for references. They are asking for references from people I currently report to. That seems out of order to me. They have not given me an offer yet so I have not told my current company I'm considering leaving. What's protocol in this situation? |

The "coworker" reference seems likes a safe idea but honestly, you have nothing to lose if you use your employer/boss. If you know you were a good worker, no problems or hassles, its only fair for your boss to give you a satisfactory review. Here is my experience: I pretty much disliked my job so I told them I had a job in the wakes and I needed to give my two weeks (but I really didn't have a job, anyway). So now I am going on plentiful interviews and the famous question they ask me is "why did I leave without having another job lined up?" I tell them (which is my honest answer) that I wanted to focus on an accounting career instead of HR and job search, as well. But it seems, to them that they always question my leaving and it didn't make any sense so pretty much, they are liike "lets do a reference check, yippie!" I was upset because I didn't want to have anything to doing with the employer so I called my friend who still works there and she tells me that my boss knew I lied to get out of there (how did she find out, lol?) but if anyone called to do a reference check on me, she would give them a positive review, which is really refreshing to hear. I didn't do anything bad while I was working and I knew I was a great worker. I remained professional, give my standard two weeks' notice and was respectful to upper management. So honestly, you know you were a good employee, you have nothing to lose to use them as a reference. I hope this helps.
