In Reply To: Thank you very much for your reply. Would you clarify a bit more the last sentence of your comment as to the "right personality" for nursing? Do you think being-not-fairly-aggresive is a good or bad thing for the profession, and why? My nephew does need to assess his choice from all angles. Thank you again.
Message: Acute care nursing (i.e. hospital nursing) is very fast-paced and demanding, even in areas outside of the traditional intensive care settings of ER, ICU, OR, and L&D. There are many, many other settings where nurses can practice that are less chaotic and stressful, and more suitable for those who don't thrive in high pressure environments, for example: home health care, long term care, school nursing, managed care, academia, biotechnology, etc. The "catch," if there is one, is that frequently, one must often work in acute care for at least a short time to gain experience to be able to more into these other areas. This orientation period can be very difficult for some new grads, but most learn what is needed, then move on to their preferred field without undue distress, and enjoy the rest of their careeer.
