Hi,
I've been working in biotech as an R&D engineer for the last 5 yrs, starting to realize I spend a lot of extra time brushing up on finance. How do I switch over to a career in finance? I really enjoy asset/portfolio management and have started studying for CFA level I. Should I start applying for entry level positions now in finance or wait until I pass the exam? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Probably you may want to get an MBA. CFA takes about 3 years to get. By itself, it does not carry enough weight. With your current background, getting into the finance door is not easy.
