Is there any other way to get a job with a large defense contractor, other than applying to jobs on their website or going through a headhunter? I keep hearing the conventional wisdom about networking and that you have to ??know someone on the inside,?? but that has never worked for me. I came close to getting a job once when I knew a hiring manager personally at another company. Then it got shot down when upper management had to approve it.
I know many different managers at companies I have worked at in the past. I can call up any of them for a friendly conversation, but if I bring up the topic of employment the tone changes. I hear something that sounds like a recorded message. They usually say if I am interested in employment, I can check out the jobs listed on the company??s official website.
The company websites are a black hole. I have been applying to Boeing in St. Louis for 16 years and have not been called in for a single interview. I did have one phone screen, but never heard from them again. Some of the jobs I have applied for, I thought I was a perfect match. I had all of the requirements and if it said ??minimum 5 years experience and must be able to get a secret clearance,?? I have 17 years experience and already have a secret clearance. It must be like winning a lottery. Or they have already hired someone and are just posting the jobs for legal reasons.
BTW: I am a Sr. Software Engineer with 17 years experience in C/C++, OOP/OOD,UML,Rational Rose, Artisan, Clearcase, CORBA, VxWorks, embedded application layer, distributed systems, etc. I have worked at Texas Instruments, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, ProServices and Lockheed Martin.
