It has been drilled into me (I am a 1993 undergrad and a 2001 law school grad) that thank you notes are absolutely necessary following an interview. After many years of following this rule, I interviewed for a job and did not send a thank you note. It finally occurred to me that between my taking the day off from work, buying a new suit, paying for parking, etc etc, for a job I ultimately wasn't interested in -- why on earth would I thank them? And conversely, if I should, why shouldn't they also thank me? |

last semester i flew out to new york and dc on several occasions to be stretched out on a rack for interviews. i'm amazed that no one thanked me for (among other things) missing class time.
