I will graduate in less than a year with a 4-year business degree. I want to earn a MBA, but I have limited financial resources and limited work experience. I am considering joining either the Air Force or Navy as an officer. This way, I can receive money for my education and earn valuable work experience. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or comments. Perhaps some of you are considering the military, or perhaps some of you might know some reasons why I should or should not pursue this plan. I welcome any comments! |

Hi BGS! I'm a Lieutenant in the Navy stationed in Naples, Italy. I went through the Nuclear Power pipeline and served onboard a submarine out of Pearl Harbor. I loved living in Hawaii (for obvious reasons) but serving onboard a sub as a Junior Officer (JO) is extremely gruelling, to say the least. A lot is expected of you, and the learning curve is very steep. However, the opportunity to lead a division of 8-15 guys right out of the gates is a great opportunity. And leadership is the commodity you really take with you from this business. The pay is also quite good for a recent college grad, especially if you go to HI. I'm getting ready to get out and pursue an MBA myself, the boat burned me out pretty good. But, I learned a lot. Not just technical knowledge, but a lot about people as well. Good luck to you in your quest for employment!
