In Reply To: I was recently contacted by a recruiter about a position. He asked me for my current salary. I went an answer I had seen on this site?? that I would prefer to wait until a mutual interest had been established before disclosing that info. He wrote back saying he was reviewing a # of resumes for the positions and needs to know not only my current salary but also my salary when I started with the company. Honestly I still would rather not disclose the info?? would I hurt my chances with the job if I don??t disclose the salary? Issue is also I don??t really know the recruiter and I don??t remember sending him my resume although I have just started a job search and have sent it to other recruiters?? Thanks much for any advice/thoughts??
Message: First, I would agree with the response that the better solution is to provide a salary range: I would also suggest, though, that the lower number you give in the range should be the number you would realistically accept (and be satisfied with) if you were given an offer. Please also consider - should the employer continue to pressure you on this - what this tells you about the employer. They have no doubt budgeted a certain amount for the position. However, when an employer pressures applicants too greatly on this front, perhaps ask yourself: Is their corporate culture one of willingness to pay a fair salary for job duties and hours expected of the position? Are they so bottom-line oriented that this is their main driving concern as they screen applicants (as opposed to hiring a quality person for the position)? Also - if you were to land a position there, are they so cost-conscious that your job is negatively impacted by such things as manual processes, lack of materials/supplies/equipment, all in the name of cutting costs? And lastly - if that's the case - would you want to work in such a place? Only you can answer that question, however, any recruiter that has the time to write you TWICE over this issue is likely interested in your skills, but probably isn't willing to pay what you might be worth. Maybe research off of salary.com, provide a reasonable range, and acknowledge that they may be more interested in how much you cost rather than what you do. Good luck.
