I will graduate in less than a year with a 4-year business degree. I want to earn a MBA, but I have limited financial resources and limited work experience. I am considering joining either the Air Force or Navy as an officer. This way, I can receive money for my education and earn valuable work experience. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or comments. Perhaps some of you are considering the military, or perhaps some of you might know some reasons why I should or should not pursue this plan. I welcome any comments! |

I am a MBA graduate (Stern 2003). During the MBA I discovered that several of my colleagues served in the Military before and I would say that the experience in the Army was very useful for several tasks but also could have its downside.
The MBA and many of the jobs that you could get after it are very demanding, some career paths (read for example IB) are only built for people that are capable of performing at 120% for 14 hours a day for about 340 days a year or so. The organization, diligence, hard work, team spirit, etc... that you would cultivate in the Army could help you to get the best of the MBA and could help you to land a very high paid job after the program.
The downside is also obvious though. Being in the army may separate you from Business and your Business skills could be somehow missing or oxidated once you get into the MBA but I would say that the MBA is precisely the place where you can fix that, meanwhile the Army skills you better have them before you come to the MBA.
In general I would say the Military is a good option.
