I am a PhD in the academic job market, and understand what The_Professor means about campus interviews being "humiliating" "dog and pony" shows.
However, I do send thank you notes if people treated me nicely, if they showed interested in me as a professional as well as a person, and if the interview process as productive, not only for the potential employer but for me too.
Kindness is a charming aspect of professionalism, me thinks.

OK,
I admit that sometimes during campus visits, connections can be made with candidates regardless of whether they are ultimately selected. If there is an honest reason to send a note of correspondence regarding these connections or even future collaborative efforts, it is also perfectly fine to express gratitude for an excellent campus visit.
I suppose what I was objecting to is the purported value of a generic sort of "thanks for the memories" kind of note on a card, which is literally something I have received in the past. I've often thought "you're thanking me for giving you the third degree?"
The previous poster (an Australian?) has hit the nail in saying that a thank-you that seems to be uncalled for can be a turn-off, which is what I meant by "ingratiating" in the original post.
