In Reply To: As a person who has worked in HR in the past, a thank you note works as an effective way to reiterate ones skills and to recap on details that were discussed during the interview. One should always be thankful for an interview opportunity.
Message: As a person who is currently "in HR," as you folks say, it seems that the original post is proof positive that not every person responsible for hiring decisions is at all appreciative of thank-you notes, and candidates therefore run the risk of a backfire with the tactic. As I said in the first place, I don't believe one should be thankful for nothing or worse, and "the opportunity to prove that you are the best candidate" is certainly worse than nothing. Only the unbelievably conceited are actually happy to have to argue that they are the most valuable person in sight. Most normal people just want to be valued for who we are, without having to compete for every scrap all day long. And then to thank someone for the experience! Of all the lunacy.
