In Reply To: Here's my story: I have a degree in English Literature from a highly competitive college here in the northeast. I worked hard and got a high GPA and all that. I've considered going to graduate school but I don't like school all that much. In fact, I despise it! I graduated three years ago and have not had the opportunity to work in a real job since graduating. I've had three seperate jobs since then, with one of them being full-time. They have all been uninteresting retard work (my apologies to any retards out there). For the past year and a half, I have been applying to jobs with some potential. I must have e-mailed 50 or so resumes and cover letters. I have not heard back from any of these people. It feels like I have been wasting my time. Here are my questions: What can I do with a degree in English Literature? What are my options? Where is the best place to look for jobs? As for networking, my social circle consists of mostly working-class people. Also, my last name bespeaks an eastern european heritage and it's difficult to pronounce - does that hurt my chances of getting an interview? My impression of these hiring people is that they have really narrow criteria and a weird last name is enough to get your correspondence thrown in the dreaded circular file. I've tried everything and I'm running out of patience. I'm looking to blame someone. Can you help me find someone to blame? Or, can you at least give me some advice, if you've run into similar problems or know of someone who has? Thanks, JS
Message: hehe, i AM from eastern europe, my last name is unpronouncable and i don't think i was discriminated in any way during my job search. i wouldn't blame that. it all depends what jobs you are looking at. english literature, except for the strictly academia kind of jobs can be used in any position that requires editing, correspondence, creative writing type of thing. i'm not an expert, you probably know better. if you have the skills required for the position (that your major and work experience gave you) then you are probably doing something wrong and cannot sell yourself properly. don't blame it on the last name... believe me on that one...
