In Reply To: graduated in December with my JD and MBA, and have been looking for work since with little luck. I have several years experience while in school, but they are mostly of an entrepreneurial nature, and very little to do with law. I'm looking in both legal and business fields, though I'd like to do a little of both. My experience hasn't seemed to translate particularly well into the HR departments search criteria. I'd like to stay in the Northwest, but I'm willing to relocate if absolutely necessary. Any suggestions? I'm far past frustration and would appreciate any help.
Message: Here's your problem: "My experience hasn't seemed to translate particularly well into the HR departments search criteria." Beyond being able to play rudimentary buzzword bingo, HR people generally know very little about what the firms that they work for do. If you have even a slightly unconvential background, the chances are that you'll slip through their semantic filters. Find positions in firms that interest you. Find out who you'll be reporting to in those positions, and contact them directly. Understand that you're imposing on them, and be respectful of their time, but be aggressive. One last bit of advice that you're not going to like is this: be aware that in law and b-schools, names matter. If you find out that a firm only hires from Harvard, or Kellog, or Wharton, or etc., don't waste your time if you didn't come from there. They're looking for a commoditized product. Keep plugging!
