Hi,
I have been given an opportunity for a one year fellowship on the West Coast following graduation from my masters in May. I'm currently in Washington, DC. I only have about 4 days to decide to take it or leave it.
Professionally speaking I think it would be good for me - interesting work and a good credential...although, I could acquire the same sort of experience here in DC.
Personally, however, I'm torn. While I would love to live in this new city and all the opportunities for outdoor activities I can't enjoy on the East Coast, I would just be breaking even on salary, and...most important to me right now...I would be leaving the network of friends I've built up here in DC.
Before grad school I was in the military and moved a lot. I feel that this is the first opportunity I have to stay in one place and actually have a social life for more than a short period of time. I would love to eventually go back to the West because of the lifestyle, but at this point I'm pretty sick of moving and don't want to leave the network I have here...at least not for another year or two. Moreover, I would probably end up back on the East coast after the year program - and thus would be in the same job seeking situation a year from now.
So, much to my surprise, I'm actually thinking of just staying in DC. Does this make sense or does it just sound like I'm lazy?

Create two columns, PROs/CONs.
weigh each one, according to importance... sum them up.
a complete stranger probably won't have much to offer besides the above. But, staying put certainly doesn't sound lazy if it's in your best interest.
