In Reply To: Hi, I have been given an opportunity for a one year fellowship on the West Coast following graduation from my masters in May. I'm currently in Washington, DC. I only have about 4 days to decide to take it or leave it. Professionally speaking I think it would be good for me - interesting work and a good credential...although, I could acquire the same sort of experience here in DC. Personally, however, I'm torn. While I would love to live in this new city and all the opportunities for outdoor activities I can't enjoy on the East Coast, I would just be breaking even on salary, and...most important to me right now...I would be leaving the network of friends I've built up here in DC. Before grad school I was in the military and moved a lot. I feel that this is the first opportunity I have to stay in one place and actually have a social life for more than a short period of time. I would love to eventually go back to the West because of the lifestyle, but at this point I'm pretty sick of moving and don't want to leave the network I have here...at least not for another year or two. Moreover, I would probably end up back on the East coast after the year program - and thus would be in the same job seeking situation a year from now. So, much to my surprise, I'm actually thinking of just staying in DC. Does this make sense or does it just sound like I'm lazy? Thanks.
Message: Create two columns, PROs/CONs. weigh each one, according to importance... sum them up. a complete stranger probably won't have much to offer besides the above. But, staying put certainly doesn't sound lazy if it's in your best interest.
