i'm being a better job (more $ and higher position) with a competitorm firm. but i really like my current firm. is it a good idea to use this offer as leverage against your current firm in the aim of getting them to match the offer? does anyone have any experience as to whether this works or is it a bad idea? |

A lot depends on your existing firm's dependence upon both you and your skills. How easily can you be replaced? What is your relationship like with your boss? You need also be prepared to leave and take that new job if your current manager calls your bluff. And if the offer is with a direct compeitor, be sure to have your desk packed because your company may just decide escort you out.
Answer these questions for yourself: Is the other company, salary and position better than what you have? Are working conditions or benefits 'across the street' measurably better? With whom do you best connect with? Where is there a more defined career path? Do you even want the other job?
It also never hurts to let your supervisor know that YOU are in demand. An honest and forthright mention of the competitor's job offer and salary at an appropriate moment is certainly in your best interest. You will quickly learn your value by how your manager(s) respond. But deliberately leveraging offers is a cat-and-mouse game that can (and does) easily backfire and can leave bad feelings all around.
