In Reply To: Tough call. There are lots of opinions on how to proceed, and I would look seriously at some career management books and or articles for more guidance than this board will provide. I'd also talk to some senior mentors who have jumped to another firm in the industry. The problem lies in the danger of alienating your current employer, and raising questions about your loyalty. If you are happy where you are, then you are richer than you can possibly imagine in this modern work environment. On the other hand, you want a reasonable wage, and need new challenges, so if your current employer can't offer those in a reasonable time frame, then it is good to look around. There are plenty of way to frame the negotiation for pay, but barring a disertation on that topic on this board, I'd reference some better career management sources. You'll be glad you were VERY well prepared for such a discussion. Remember, it is all about how you frame your position.
Message: thanks for the advice. i agree that change for the sake of change is not worth it, but when you receive an unsolicited offer doing pretty the same thing at somewhere else for much more $$, it can make you wonder your worth. i think that i do have good career prospects where i am (i may be wrong) and it annoys me more than anything else to find out what the 'market rate' is for what you do. do have any recommended career management books that can shed some light on this topic?
