I was recently laid off after 3.5 years at a hedge fund. Except for a couple short term jobs before I got settled this was my first job out of school. I started in the back office and then moved to converts as a trading assistant. It's been suggested that my next job should be at a big bank where I can learn a lot (where the company will educate me through classes and other means). I'm wondering if this is sound advice. Also, I was told of a position at a major bank in Prime Brokerage. Would I be limiting myself to back office experience if I pursued this? Is it difficult to move within a big bank to a trading desk after working in the prime brokerage area?
