Currently in a situation where the lead manager, who I work for directly, is very well connected with people in and out of her industry. I want to start testing the waters for a new position by sending out resumes, but afraid someone may see our company and get back to my manager about someone from their firm doing a job search, which will definitely put my job at risk.
Any suggestions what I can.

U've probably received this reply already, dur to the networking at Vault. In case u haven't here's my 2 cents worth:
Approach a very good Headhunter with your resume.
Ask around for the Head-hunting firm. Not all are good or discreet. More important, some actually concentrate on particular industries, eg, Banking because the renumeration asked is so high. (As u know the Headhunter takes 1-3 months of the quantum of your pay in commissions.
Specify clearly what u want in your next job. U may actually know of an opening in another firm in your Industry. To approach them directly is signing your death warrant. Get the Head-hunter to do it for you and negotiate the terms for you.
Never tell anyone where you are going until you are into your first week at work in your new job.
And never 'send out resumes'
Once you are 'over-exposed' or 'oversold', you weaken your negotiating strength and come out looking desperate. Know your value.
Good Luck!
