In Reply To: I was in a very similar situation until a month ago. I am also an engineer (not electrical, though). I also received the same type of advice that you received...All the common places: "market yourself", "talk to the hiring manager", "call the CEO", etc., etc.. All of that may work for some professionals. I don't know how to do that, and I never had to do it before to get my previous jobs. If this is your case, I can give you some advice. You are an electrical engineer, right? Currently, there is a good engineering field that needs engineers, electrical, mechanical, etc.: the medical device manufacturing field. There are lots and lots of medical device manufacturing companies in every state, some of them small others big, which are desperate to find some engineers. This is a very good field, with excellent future perspectives. My advice is for you to get a little knowledgeable about the field, perhaps take some seminar or course at your local university on medical devices (ISO 13485, FDA regulations for medical devices, medical device design, etc.), or attend a week long seminar in a professional engineering organization. Almost any organization is having that type of seminars...this is a very hot topic. Then, focus your job search in that field, apply to the big companies, but do not forget the small ones...I found my job at a small company (54 employees), and I am very happy!
Message: I'm a Comp Scientist. How do you apply to the medical device companies? As far as I understand (and looked through our local medical device companies), it's the same issue that they have no jobs advertised. Thus, it come to the common places anyway: "market yourself", "talk to the hiring manager", "call the CEO", etc., etc.. I used to be selfemployed and directly talked with customers, but these guys are not customers as they don't trade for *their* money when hiring.
