I am 52 years old. I am within 2 classes of getting my California teaching credential for special education. I had a teaching job last year on "emergency credential". That position was 40 freeway miles away. The director was pretty decent and let me go because she could see that teaching, driving, going to college and trying to be a breadwinner for my family was not good for either of us. I got a $3000 check last April and now I am on unemployment. Every interview I go to goes great. I do all the right things. The interviewers all love me. I am told I act professionally. Yet,I have not been hired. What is up with that? |

Are you asking for the job during the course of the interview?
Put out a ??feeler?? question, something like: "Mr. Decision Maker, during this interview you've outlined X,Y and Z. My X,Y and Z experience seem to be a good match for this position, wouldn't you agree?" Now sit back and wait. Listen.
Assuming the answer is yes your next question should be: "what would I need to do to secure an offer today?"
Let them know you want the job. Too many job seekers are afraid to ASK for the job. You have to express your interested.
If the answer is no - you at least know that while you're still there and have the opportunity to turn that NO back into a YES!
If you leave without finding out what your chances are ?? it's very seldom that you're given that chance again.
Personality and professionalism do play into hiring, as well as age. Unfortunately most of us can't hide from our age. Personality and professionalism usually just aren't enough. I??ve interviewed lots of people that I really liked personally. However, if they didn??t convince me they were the best candidate ?? they didn??t get the offer.
Here??s something you could try:
Call some of the interviewers you met with that didn??t extend offer to you. Explain that you are looking to improve your interviewing skills and ask what you could have done to get the offer while you were there. Ask them to be very honest and not spare your feelings. Be prepared for their feedback, both positive and negative. Don??t get defensive. Just listen and absorb what happened and make the changes necessary to end your job search.
I bet this will give you the insight you need.
Hope this is helpful!
