In Reply To: Looking for advice from people who are pro's at networking. I am trying to get into Consulting/Investment Banking Industry. I have a few contacts in both. They are fairly recent contacts and we talk not about jobs but B-schools. How do I get these guys/gals to help me get into Consult/IB without burning bridges? Some of the articles on vault tell you not ask for a job directly. If I don't ask how do I get??
Message: 1. if you're unable to choose between consulting and I-banking, then you shouldn't be asking for a job yet. 2. read the Vault and WetFeet guides on consulting and i-banking before you talk to your contacts though. do some more research on their companies. read the consulting and I-banking message boards here. 3. therefore, you should be asking your contacts why they chose the one they did. ask how they got their job. ask what classes they took at B-school, which B-school they went to, etc. ask about the industry--which companies are doing well, which companies they would work for if they weren't already employed, etc. tell them you are interested in becoming a consultant or banker (pick one!) and ask their advice on how to accomplish that. but you definitely need to do your homework before you start asking for big things, like a job.
