In Reply To: I can't tell you how many times a week we hear, "I'm just looking for job security." Everyone says they are looking for job security. What professionals don??t seem to understand is job security is no longer about a company. The days of gold watches and 25 year anniversary parties are all but gone. Instead, the new job security is YOU. You, the professional, must take responsibility for your own job security. YOU must keep your skills on the cutting edge. It's up to you to make your experience and skills invaluable and in demand. YOU need the fore- thought to recession and layoff-proof your career. You must take responsibility for your future and not expect that someone (or something) else will. Thoughts? Andrea http://interviewing.com/
Message: The landscape has changed for two very fundamental reasons: One, globalization, with the emergence of technology and the interconnection of global economies, the traditional vertical and/or lateral long-term growth opportunities with companies no longer resemble the paradigm our parents came to know and depend on. Now, the labor market, for employers, engenders talented professionals from all over the world, already prepackaged, so to speak, i.e., with the high level skills and education too not only hit the ground running but create an entirely different path. Second, Corporate America is fundamentally different post the tecnology bubble and longest recession, some would say, since the Great one; now for a public company it's all about hitting the "streets numbers". With the glut of overstaffing that happened pre-bubble followed by abating margins post-bubble, requiring firms to become much more efficient in the short run (labor) and long run (production efficiency)... Alright, i'm reading this and it's pretty esoteric; so let me put it plainly: You need to look out for you. I know some of you out there are die hard romantics but the labor landscape is fundamentally changed from a generation ago. "You", rather all of us, need to be proactive and do research...find out what your truly passionate about and develop the necessary skills (on your own) in order to procure that dream job. Get out there and talk to people...i know they lament networking all the time...and i know how discouraging and down right daunting it can be, but, just set smaller goals, i.e., don't think of that person as a means to an end, but rather just a person to meet...and learn from/about. And work hard and believe in yourself and the skills that you bring to the table, because if you don't believe, nobody else will. But that's my two cents, literally ; And truly good luck to all believe me i can empathize!
