In Reply To: Hi, I have a MA in Comparative History and a MSc in European Politics and Governance from fairly prestigious schools. I'm looking for a job in business, preferably in NYC or Philadelphia. I'm open to doing almost anything to start out, even if just to see what I like, but would be interested in doing something in international business, perhaps. It's such a broad term and I have so little knowledge in the jobs that are out there that I'm not sure where to begin though. Do you have any ideas for jobs, or classes of jobs that my background might suit me for? Thanks, Matt
Message: There are some interesting consulting groups doing political risk research these days, however most are small and very specialized. The Eurasia Group is an example. Some research positions in banks may take an interest in your background as well. If you are just going for the highly sought after and lucrative general finance and business positions at banks and consulting firms in NYC, the challenge you will face is competition from MBA's, and the swarms of talented college grads who will work for much lower salaries. The top companies and b-schools have very long established, entrenched recruiting regimens that, regrettably, tend to marginalize non-traditionals in the applicant pool. The specialization you have will be very useful eventually but you will proabably have to dig much deeper for the right opportunities than a generalist with an MBA, as well as be very savvy about how you go about marketing yourself. You might also want to look at some NGO's as you search around--- less lucrative but probably much more interested in hiring academic types.
