Message Name: Help! Conpany sending contradicting messages!!

Message: Please help, I need advice because I feel that I should do something today, and thanks in advance for any help. I had my first interview with this company 3 weeks ago. Interview was with several managers in the division I would be working in and the interviews went great, I really feel that I didn't have a bad interview with any of the managers. Two weeks go by and then I hear from HR to come back in and interview with the hiring manager who is also this division's director. Once again, interview goes really well and at the end I ask him when they expect to make a decision and he tells me to call either he or one of the managers I interviewed with initially on Tuesday if I don't hear from them. I know nothing's gauranteed and even though every interview went so well I try to remain cautiously optimistic. On Tuesday I fire off an email to the director basically "just checking to see how the search is going...please feel free to contact me if I can answer and ?'s or address any issues." No answer from director so in the afternoon I call one of the managers I met initially who tells me "glad that you called, I've seen your information going around here and we're putting some numbers together that you're gonna like, I'm looking forward to seeing you..." So I'm excited but still try to remain cautious. Next day goes by and still no call with good news. Finally, at the end of the day I get an email from HR saying "we've been fotunate to have great candidates yada yada yada, we're going with someone else." I'm devastated, I really wanted this job and I would have been great at it and I don't know what happen from Tuesday when the manager said I was in to the next day. THEN>> I get a reply from the director to the email I sent Tues morning saying, "thanks for keeping in touch, I should be back in touch by Friday." And now I am officially confused... please anyone should I.... 1. Contact HR to see if the rejection email was some kind of mistake? 2. Contact the manager I spoke w/ on Tuesday to see what the situation is and get advice from him? 3. Contact the Director to see what's up? 4. Wait till friday and see what happens? I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by doing something I shouldn't, but I also want to be proactive and not let this job slip away. Any help will be tremendously appreciated
