Hi Jamescalvin,
It's hard for me (or anyone) here to give you advice when we know very little about you. Sure we could throw out suggestions - but they would be unfocused and without merit because we don't know where you excel at work - what makes you tick - what doesn't make you tick - what your motivations are, etc. With that said, it also doesn't mean there's no one here to help you.
I know sitting at a desk with nothing to do has to make you wonder... "there's got to be something else out there for me, something I could get excited about, a job I don't dread going to. If only I knew what that was!!" Kind of makes you feel like a lost puppy on the highway, doesn't it?
Here's the good news: It's not such an uncommon problem actually. There is light at the end of your tunnel, believe me.
How do I know? Because I was once YOU. In a boring job, making a living but not loving what I did.
It took a lay off and 4 months of unemployment for me to realize I didn't know which way to turn and that I need help. Sure I could have taken a job in 4 months - but nothing appealed to me. Nothing excited me. I was that lost puppy on the highway!
I sought out the help of a great career coach. With him, I outlined who I was, what made me happy, what I didn't like about my previous jobs, what I loved. I mean we dug into my soul. Once we did that, we could start outlining how the things I love could be turned into career options. Only from that point could I understand what kind of job I was actually pursuing. And the good news, with my coach's help - I accepted a job where I've been able to write my own job description! Who knew it would be working for the same career coaching firm my coach worked for ... yet here I sit!
I would have NEVER considered this industry as an option! I really owe my success to the coach who helped guide me to a place I needed to be ... I just couldn't see it!
A great career coach can help you find your way too. Your message is something a career coach hears every day. They are trained to help you figure it out.
A great coach will be able to do that, so I encourage you to take the same steps I did and unleash your real potential. You won't regret it.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, Andrea. I've read some of your other articles/advice and you make many good points.
Are there guideines in choosing a coach? Would I choose them or they choose me? In all, how much time would I reasonably expect to spend with the coach? Is it face-to-face, on the phone, email? I know there are fees to the services so what would be reasonable? Is the link you are leading me to local here in San Diego? Are there measures I can take before speaking with a career coach?
Thanks for your response. I feel a little better about investing in this online source. I guess I need to start somewhere.
regards . . .
