Hi Kas, the job searching world is a different place, isn't it?
Even job search techniques from the late 90's are obsolete. People seem to believe that all you need to do is visit the major job boards and newspapers, apply for jobs and post your resume then sit back and wait for the phone to ring.
The internet is a great tool in a job search - but not in the way you think. Sooooooooo many people are doing just what you're doing. Because all of those job seekers (your competition) can't be seen, they seem to be forgotten. But they are still there.
Let's say, XYZ company is hiring. You drive over to their location and there are 200 people standing in line at the door for that job. Does this encourage you or discourage you to apply? Will you even be noticed? How will you look and sound different than everyone else. Will they even see all 200 people that are standing in line?
The reality is overcrowded and extremely popular job boards equate to that scenario. It's the equivilant of searching with your eye to a straw!
So you must separate yourself from your job search competition. Of course you should look at job boards, just don't make that your main source of job leads. And when you do see a position posted - don't apply online with the 100's of other candidates. Get yourself in front of those decision makers.
To be quite honest, the phone, informational interviews, networking and in person visits are far more productive than job boards.
Our company uses over 23 methods to generate job leads for our clients. So as you can see, there are many other things you can do besides sit and hope for the best.

An acquaintance, who is a consults in career management, told me that the current job market will be filled through less traditional (i.e., recruiters, job postings in newspapers, etc.) means than before and be more reliant on networking and referals (makes sense - more cost effective).
It seems that the key will be to build networks of people in various positions that can be tapped for intelligence or for putting your resume where it does the most good.
