Message: I'd be concerned about any professional willing to take on a "project" for the sake of being a reference. References should be able to quantify and validate an employee??s professional history - that is from first hand knowledge. Getting to know someone outside a professional setting, with no knowledge of that person??s real work ethic or abilities inside a company (actually doing the work) is not an ethical practice, in my opinion. Think about it, this person can tell his "virtual reference" anything and the reference has no way to back that up - unless the reference calls his real references. Which would be my advice to anyone taking on this project. Better yet, your friend needs to build his own references from people who KNOW his work ethic and who can talk honestly about how well he gets the job done. Then references will never be a problem. If this person has NO ONE from his professional history that is willing to stand up and be accounted for - that makes me nervous. What's going on in your friend's professional past???? Why isn't there some team member, colleague, friend willing to stand up and be counted for? Surely there's a co-worker or colleague from his past that can tell a potential employer how wonderful and great his performance has been??? Tell your friend to work on building his own repertoire of legitimate contacts built through diligence, determination and hard work - that way his friends don't have to go online and ask virtual strangers to "vouch" for him.
