In Reply To: Unfortunately yes. It can and does happen all the time if you (the negotiator) don't present your value to that employer beyond the offer. Here's what I mean: If you asked for more money, but didn't justify WHY you deserved more money (other than you were "expecting" more) then I can see why that employer may think you are more interested in $$ than the actual job. Even though you and I know that's not true. That can become their "reason" for selecting Joe Schmoe who is willing to accept the $60K offer. Here's something to consider. Never, ever, ever, ever begin your negotiations at the point the offer is given to you. Explain you don't make snap decisions about your career and you're sure they wouldn't want you to. Then you have time to gather your thoughts and your presentation and go back to that employer ready to WOW them with why you deserve more and how their investment in you is a wise one. Just asking for more money without any justification will rarely ever work and isn't really the best negotiation strategy. Hope this helps! Andrea
Message: Andrea, Actually they contacted me in the morning to make the offer. I called them back in the afternoon after having prepared a whole argumentation about why I'm worth more: experience, certifications, degrees. The HR lady told me that she will check with her boss. I'm planning to call her right now and ask for any news. Thanks for your help Andrea.
