In Reply To: Is it possible to be blacklisted by a recruiter/headhunter? The reason I ask is one patricular firm I have dealt with has become very "cold" to me. It also goes further: I answer ads (albeit via Monster.com - but directly to their e-mail) that they have on the intrenet where the position would be a perfect fit (and I know because as I read the ad I see all the same bullet points on my resume)but not a nibble. I have written them off but I am angry. Should I confront them in a carefully worded letter or drop the matter and just persevere by looking with other recruiters and on my own? Any advice would be appreciated.
Message: There are some really good Recruiters and some really bad ones. I know some sleazy accountants, attorneys and doctors but I do not write off their entire profession. A few helpful hints: 1. Do your homework. Target recruiters who specialize in your industry or technical expertise, as they typically have a level of proficiency that a generalist firm will not have. 2. Realize that executive recruiters do not work for you. Repeat... you do not pay their salary. There is an old saying in the recruiting field..." Recruiters do not find jobs for people, they find people for jobs!" If you don't get the difference, you're doomed from the start. 3. Confidence. The "it" factor! What ever you want to call it. If you don't have it, get it! Recruiters tend to avoid desperate people. Be selective of when and what you apply for. Guard your reputation as if your career depends on it, because it probably does. 4. Realize that the recruiter is not making the hiring decision. Very rarely are they sucessful in trying to fit square pegs into round holes. They are hired by companies to find a very exact set of qualifications and/or skills. Just because you think you can do a job does not mean you're qualified. Don??t shoot the messenger! Just as you don??t put your health in the hands of any doctor that comes along, take control of your career. If you??re not getting the results you want or need, get a second opinion. Best of Luck!
