In Reply To: Yep - its tough market out there...first check out www.dbm.com and see if they still have report showing how less than 1% of people get jobs thru internet... Depending on your degree...MIT is a decent school - start finding that retail fall back job - yes I am serious. You need to keep some cash coming in and having a job keeps your resume history in line. You need to find someone who wants to hire a person. That's the hard part. Then you have to find someone willing to hire you. Tougher. So you need to figure out - who is hiring...they may not advertise. That is what networking is about. Like at the mall - some people have signs - others haven't yet hired for summer/retail. Start small...drive around Boston to see which companies have signs. Check out MANPOWER and temp places...go in with full resume and say "i can do this" and "what do you need done"... Its tougher if you are an engineer...but look around at small places...see if you can find some Venture Captial firms and find out which ones are doing well. Students loans? Get everythign ready in case you need to forebear in 6 months...its the toughest economy out there! Good luck and complain to your polical leaders - I mean isn;t it stupid that you will have this degree from MIT but YOU cannot find a job? What does this say about MIT and the economy? Don;t blame yourself...there are tons of graduates out there looking for work with lots of degrees!
Message: Before 2001, I had several recruiters contacting me daily and several interviews with job offers. After the economy crashed, I have been scrambling from job-to-job as companies have been downsizing and going bankrupt. Finally, I was dislocated last year, and the company paid for career counseling. You need to develop a marketing plan and then select your target companies. Then you need to find ways to develop relationships with the insiders. I basically use the Internet job sites to find openings at various companies on my target list. Then, I go and submit my resume online. This found me a job within 5 months, but I'm still under employed and not using my skills/education. The fact is there are too many highly qualified people and not enough jobs. It doesn't help when someone in India/China will work for 1/4 the wage either. However, on the upside, it should get better in 2008, when the babyboomers start retiring. Currently, I find myself working with a lot of older people that have not maintained their skill sets. The key is to keep your skills sharp, so when these people retire, you will be there to fill the position.
