While no expereince in Semi conductors; most Mat Sci do some materials testing - so learn something about how testing is done. Learn how a tensile test is done to "spec" like the ASTM standards or industry specific. Get any exp you can - like on mechancial testing machines like Instron. Learn something about computer to test interfaces or programs like LABView - which you use to write as interface between computer and hardware.
SAMPE is a great organization for material sci types - i was memeber - you can get directory which lists lots of members...and contact the local chapter to you as well.
Check out pages of Wall Street Journal on the companies listed to see how the biz is doing...great leads on where the industry is headed. Check out if any professors at your school have grants with companies...chances are they do and that can mean a contact.
Learn to write conscise reports of lab data and be able to boil down the tests to a few exec. summary points to...
Good luck and keep eye on other areas like biomimcry etc
